Ambulatory Expansion Combines Diagnostic Imaging with Multispecialty Services
NYU Langone Health has opened a new ambulatory imaging and specialty care facility in Riverhead, New York, expanding its outpatient network on Long Island’s East End. The 25,000-square-foot center integrates diagnostic imaging with multispecialty services, representing an expansion model that combines patient convenience with infrastructure optimization.

Imaging Infrastructure
Approximately 13,000 square feet are dedicated to imaging, including MRI, CT, X-ray, breast cancer screening via mammography, and bone density testing. The range of modalities allows patients to complete most diagnostic exams without traveling to the network’s Manhattan hospitals.
The remaining space houses clinical services in cardiology, pulmonology, orthopedics, rheumatology, vascular care, and pain management. This combination reflects a growing trend in American healthcare: concentrating multiple services in accessible ambulatory centers, reducing dependence on hospitals for procedures and consultations that don’t require inpatient stays. It’s a model that health systems worldwide are observing with interest, aligned with the expanding diagnostic imaging market.
Integration with the NYU Langone Ecosystem
The Riverhead site is situated within a corporate park housing several other NYU Langone practices, including oncology services affiliated with the Perlmutter Cancer Center, neurology, and rehabilitation services. This proximity allows patients to access multiple services without extensive travel — a significant advantage in suburban regions.
The facility is integrated with NYU Langone’s electronic health record system, enabling patients to access medical records and schedule appointments across locations. This data integration is essential for care continuity and reflects the importance of interoperability standards like DICOM for medical images and HL7 for clinical data.
Suffolk County Expansion Strategy
The opening is part of a broader expansion effort in Suffolk County. Over the past year, the New York City-based health system added six outpatient practices in the area and integrated NYU Langone Hospital-Suffolk in Patchogue as its seventh inpatient facility. Additional projects include a planned ambulatory surgery center in Patchogue and further expansion of the Suffolk hospital.
“Suffolk County continues to be an area of growth for us, with a focus on bringing even more top-quality providers and services to the region,” said Oren Cahlon, MD, executive vice president and chief clinical officer at NYU Langone. The strategy aims to ensure East End patients receive the same coordinated, high-quality care that defines NYU Langone across the metropolitan area.
Implications for Global Healthcare Delivery
NYU Langone’s expansion model offers valuable insights for health systems worldwide. Integrating diagnostic imaging with clinical specialties in a single location reduces operational costs and improves patient experience. The trend of hospital decentralization — moving diagnostics and ambulatory procedures to smaller, more accessible centers — is particularly relevant for countries where access to advanced diagnostic imaging services remains concentrated in major urban centers.
As the role of the radiologist evolves, ambulatory imaging centers like this one represent the clinical settings where much of future radiology practice will take place — closer to patients, integrated with other specialties, and connected through digital health infrastructure.
