Fujifilm Bets on AI Embedded in Radiology Workflows

Fujifilm Healthcare Americas showcased its latest AI-powered enterprise imaging solutions at HIMSS 2026 in Las Vegas. The company’s Synapse portfolio focuses on automating workflows, reducing administrative burden, and accelerating radiologist interpretation — challenges that have become critical as exam volumes increase and workforce shortages persist.

Synapse AI Orchestrator: Algorithm Hub

The primary highlight is the Synapse AI Orchestrator, an open imaging workflow orchestrator that uses an advanced rules engine to seamlessly bring preferred imaging algorithm results directly into Synapse Enterprise PACS workflows. The platform is designed for true interoperability, allowing healthcare IT staff to deploy and maintain multiple AI clinical applications across the entire enterprise.

“AI delivers exceptional impact in medical informatics when it’s seamlessly embedded into the clinical workflows,” said Bill Lacy, senior vice president of medical informatics at Fujifilm. This philosophy of AI embedded in workflow — rather than as a standalone tool — aligns with the trend that GE HealthCare has also been demonstrating at HIMSS 2026, reinforcing the market’s shift toward native AI integration within existing systems.

Worklist Orchestrator: Intelligent Load Balancing

Another featured solution is the Synapse Worklist Orchestrator, a workload balancing and worklist orchestration tool that transforms how studies are assigned and interpreted. The system uses AI-powered learning modules and patented assignment algorithms, automatically distributing studies based on conditions defined by the organization.

“Given the challenges groups face today — explosive volumes, rampant burnout, and severe staffing shortages — I genuinely cannot fathom how any practice survives without leveraging this type of solution,” said Dr. Mohit Naik, President of Hackensack Radiology Group. The tool supports complex workflows across radiology, cardiology, and pathology PACS, with the option to ensure assignment equity across subspecialists.

Expansion into Cardiology and Pathology

Beyond radiology solutions, Fujifilm is expanding its AI capabilities into cardiology, pathology, and non-imaging AI models. The company also debuted Synapse One in North America for the first time, a comprehensive workflow solution designed for outpatient imaging needs. The growing number of FDA-approved AI devices creates an ecosystem where orchestrators like Synapse AI Orchestrator become essential for managing the complexity of multiple algorithms.

Implications for Healthcare Systems

For institutions operating with Fujifilm PACS or evaluating modernization of their radiology information systems, the solutions presented at HIMSS represent a significant evolution. The approach of AI as an orchestration layer — rather than a point solution — can facilitate gradual adoption of AI algorithms without requiring replacement of existing infrastructure, making the radiology informatics ecosystem more flexible and future-ready.
