First 3T MRI Scanner Designed for Neonates

Eyas Medical Imaging of Cincinnati has received FDA 510(k) clearance for the Ascent3T — described as the first dedicated 3T neonatal MRI system on the market. Unlike adapted adult scanners, this equipment was designed from the ground up for neonatal anatomy.

The clinical impact is direct: critically ill newborns often need to be transported to distant radiology departments for MRI — a process involving significant risks. With the Ascent3T installable directly in the NICU, those risks are eliminated.

Innovative Technical Specifications

The system stands out for several technical characteristics:

  • Compact footprint: Designed for direct installation in the NICU
  • Minimal helium: Operates with less than 2 liters of liquid helium — a fraction of what conventional scanners require
  • No quench pipe: No external venting required, simplifying installation
  • Detachable table: Enables patient transport within the NICU

The system was developed using clinical data from over 1,700 infant scans performed at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. It incorporates components and software from Philips Medical Systems.

Clinical Significance

Charles Dumoulin, professor of pediatrics and radiology and founder of the company, stated that the technology aims to “bring an unprecedented level of MR imaging and access to the most vulnerable patients, when and where they need it.”

For professionals managing DICOM medical imaging infrastructure, this type of equipment raises important questions about integration with hospital PACS systems and neonatology-specific workflows. U.S. commercialization is expected to begin later in 2026.
