The kit locks the transducer and needle into one assembly and keeps the needle path inside the imaging plane. Announced on September 30 and reported by AuntMinnie, the idea is to replace “blind” or free-hand needle advancement with a puncture that stays visible on screen, particularly for vascular access. The device is registered as a Class II medical device in China only, and the company claims no clearance in any other jurisdiction.

Ultrasound-guided puncture with a transducer in a sterile cover. Illustrative image, not the Vemerix product. Photo: Pexels.

What Vemerix is launching

According to the company’s press release, the kit secures the transducer and the puncture needle and guides the needle to the target under real-time imaging. The needle guide holds the path within the beam plane, so the operator advances the needle while watching the tip on the monitor. The manufacturer says the design is meant to reduce needle-tip excursion and help avoid posterior-wall penetration, a well-known complication of venous cannulation.

There are four configurations, from a standalone needle-guide bracket (model MDS-A) to a full procedure kit (MDS-D) that bundles an acoustic membrane, coupling gel, drape, sterile gloves and skin-prep supplies. In total, the line spans 45 size codes. The most relevant commercial point is customization: Vemerix says it adapts the guide to the transducers customers already own, without requiring the company’s own ultrasound system. The kit is offered to distributors, private-label partners and ultrasound manufacturers that want to add it to their portfolios.

On the regulatory side, the release lists a Class II registration in China, approved on June 2, 2026, and a Chinese invention patent granted in November 2025 for a vascular-puncture ultrasound guide. The registration number carries the Shandong provincial prefix, consistent with the Chinese system in which Class II devices are approved by provincial branches of the NMPA. Availability in other markets, the company stresses, depends on local requirements.

The figures released and what they are worth

Weihai Medison reports that the design has been iterated with clinical users since a 2022 pilot, through three ultrasound generations and five major plus 22 minor revisions of the guide bracket. Over the past six months, according to feedback the company collected from users across more than 1,000 punctures, the reported puncture-and-catheter-placement success rate was 96%. The release itself is careful to say these are field reports, not the result of a controlled clinical investigation. There is no comparator group, no standardized definition of success, no count of attempts per patient and no complication log. For a technical reader, the number is a usability signal, not performance evidence.

Company founder Lily (Lianhua) Nan, a named inventor on the patent, summed up the core argument: however good the ultrasound console is, it cannot by itself solve the problem of keeping the needle in the plane the operator is watching.

Why keeping the needle in plane matters

Ultrasound-guided puncture can be performed in two ways. In the out-of-plane (short-axis) approach, the needle crosses the beam transversely and appears only as a hyperechoic dot; it is quick and widely used for venous access, but the visible dot may be the shaft rather than the tip, which favors through-and-through puncture of the vessel. In the in-plane (long-axis) approach, the whole shaft and tip are displayed, but the beam’s elevational thickness is only a few millimeters, and any slight rotation of the hand takes the needle out of view. That is exactly the difficulty mechanical guides try to remove.

Transducer-mounted brackets have existed for decades, mainly for prostate, liver and breast biopsy, and many ultrasound vendors offer fixed-angle guides with on-screen trajectory lines. What differs between products is the fit for each transducer model, the choice of angles and gauges, and the sterile packaging. Needle visibility is also a matter of physics: at steep insertion angles less specular reflection returns to the transducer, which drove the development of echogenic needles and beam-steering enhancement features on newer scanners. Projects such as MIT’s augmented-reality ultrasound and AI systems that coach the exam, such as ThinkSono’s AI for DVT ultrasound, tackle the same reproducibility problem from other angles.

Applications and infection control

Guidelines from anesthesiology, critical care and radiology societies have long recommended real-time ultrasound for central venous catheterization, especially of the internal jugular vein, because it reduces the number of attempts and inadvertent arterial punctures. The same reasoning applies to PICC lines, arterial lines, difficult peripheral access, paracentesis, thoracentesis, regional nerve blocks and musculoskeletal procedures such as ultrasound-guided carpal tunnel release. In interventional radiology, percutaneous biopsies of the thyroid, breast, lymph nodes and liver are routine, and trajectory accuracy is part of a department’s quality control.

The sterile-kit format plays an additional role: a transducer entering the field of a percutaneous procedure needs a sterile cover and sterile gel, and standardizing those items in a single pack reduces variation between operators. It is the business model Vemerix describes in its own report published in July: the imaging console as the durable platform and the registered single-use consumable as the clinical interface and the basis of the regulatory file. That logic is familiar to anyone following the upgrades to interventional imaging systems, where software and accessories increasingly carry the clinical value.

Implications for Latin America and limitations

To enter Brazil, the kit would need ANVISA authorization under RDC 751/2022, which classifies medical devices by risk; there is no public information about such a filing, and the same applies to other Latin American regulators. For imaging departments and hospitals, the appeal lies in guides compatible with installed transducers, which could make it cheaper to standardize vascular access in ICUs and interventional suites. When evaluating any product of this kind, buyers should ask for compatibility data for each transducer, the supported range of gauges and angles, sterility validation and independent clinical evidence. For now, the Vemerix launch is a supply offer backed by unaudited figures, not a change in technique.

Source: AuntMinnie and Vemerix press release (PR Newswire)

Vemerix takes a sterile ultrasound-guided puncture kit with an in-plane needle guide global; it holds a Class II registration in China only.

[100

post-19669","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-radiology
Vemerix takes a sterile ultrasound-guided puncture kit with an in-plane needle guide global; it holds a Class II registration in China only.
On September 30, 2026 Vemerix (Weihai Medison Medical Equipment, China) launched internationally a sterile single-use ultrasound-guided puncture kit that secures transducer and needle and keeps the needle in the imaging plane, aimed at vascular access.
